Joss Turnbull
Joss Turnbull, percussion The young and experimental percussionist Joss Turnbull is a true newcomer in the international world percussion scene. He was influenced by world percussion instruments right from the beginning of his life. Led and inspired by his father, percussionist Mike Turnbull, he started by learning latin and oriental hand drums. Later he was taught persian percussion by Mohammad Mortazavi and is currently studying latin percussion at the University of Music and Performing Arts Mannheim. Over the years concerts and workshops have taken him all over Europe.
2002 Joss Turnbull was invited by Dr. Masaru Emoto to give an opening concert for the world wide congress of water in Lichtenstein. Furthermore Turnbull was supporting act from Trilok Gurtu and Hermann Kathans "Buschwerk" with Nippy Noya. In 2007 Joss was the youngest teacher at the International Frame Drum Festival "Tamburi Mundi" in Freiburg, Germany. Since 2008 he teaches frame drums and tombak at the oriental music academy Mannheim.
Frame drums are one of the oldest percussion instruments of the world. Possibly having its origin in the symbolic transformation of the flour sieve in ancient Mesopotamia it then spread throughout the world, developing on the way countless varieties of shape and sound.
In this workshop you will get an insight over the basic techniques and rhythms for the arabic tambourine riqq and for the large frame drum as played on the lap in a sitting position. Not just the training of individual playing skills will be in Joss's workshops but also the skills of ensemble playing. He works with an eye on the the whole playing posture so that an easy and relaxed way of playing can develop.
Additionally to the traditional Rhythms of the Orient Joss Turnbull also shows modern rhythms from fusion, pop and latin music and their adaption for the frame drum.
Individual lessons for the big frame drum (lap styl), arabic riqq and persian tombak Announcements in advance necessary
You can get an instruction for the large frame drum, the arabic riqq or for the persian tombak. The individualised instruction ( 25.-- / ½ hour ) is to deepen the personal playing style of your instrument and to work with your interest in special techniques or rhythms. You can focus on soloing or on accompanying with your Instrument. Joss covers traditional or modern established techniques as well as his personal playing style and shows their playing movements in a detailed and understandable way.The information can be downloaded here.
