Floriano Bosi, Bologna 1787 - 6-course mandolin
Original: Germanisches Nationalmuseum Nürnberg, MIR 877

In different museums in Germany, Austria and Italy for instance, there are shown a lot of 6 course mandolines that had been originally made in the 18th century. So it is very hard to decide which instrument is the "best model" to make a copy of. I decided myself to use this Bosi model. It is an model from the middle of that period, very well constructed and the results are interesting. It's size is not so typical, as it is really round in outline but with a flat mould what gives a bright clear tone and it is not so big as later models sometimes are.

This mandolin will have the following features:
  • Body 15 ribs curly maple with walnut spacers, or walnut ribs with boxwood spacers

  • The pegbox is made with maple, has an open backside and is glied into the neck.
  • For the pegs I use plum wood, a very good wood for this purpose or boxwood and they will e stained black.
