medieval lute 5 or 6 courses

Arnault of Zwolle, a shool teacher from the netherlands has written down the only single article about the "construction" of an medieval lute among the description of other instruments of that time. He has done this in the year of 1450 Besides some rough sculptures of that time this is the only help in construction of a medieval lute.

Mittelalterlaute nach Arnauld of Zwolle, Wirbelkasten

On the other hand, this description gives some details, that are in contradiction to itself or to the efforts playing music on such an instruments. Therefore I had to make some alteration. This special model does have some more alternations. On the clients special request, it has 6 cources and the body is much more thicker than the "original". The cross section of the body is not a semicircular as Zwolle describes that.

This model will have the following features:
  • Mould with 9 ribs made out of curly maple
  • Top made out of fine european spruce, having a soundhole according to the medieval design and which is stained dark red or brown or may be golden on request
  • The neck is made oud of a light wood to make the instrument not heavy and then veneered with maple.
  • The fingerboard is made out of boxwood
  • The fingerboard is made out of boxwood
  • For the pegs I use boxwood the really best wood for this purpose
  • The mould is varnished with a french polishing.
